COMPETITON AND TOURNAMENTS?
The Debate Team is one of Horace Mann’s largest clubs, with over 100 members, and the school’s only classic debate organization; two-person teams argue topics “ripped from the headlines” in competitions both within and beyond the New York area against debaters from around the country.
Team members range from the relaxed and casual to dedicated debaters who compete in (and win) tournaments hosted by the nation’s top high schools and universities (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Bronx Science, etc.).
The Debate Team meets during I periods once or twice per week. We offer a host of out-of-school tournaments depending on each student’s interest and commitment. For the most part, tournaments are held on weekends (some combination of Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) and sometimes involve missing school. While the fact that we meet more often and attend more tournaments than any other HM club can seem daunting, we work with interested students to find a tournament schedule and level of commitment that best suits their schedule. Since we have so more tournament opportunities than every other HM club combined, club members have the ability to range from the relaxed and casual to dedicated debaters.
EXPERIENCES AND BENEFITS?
Debate will afford you an opportunity to understand matters of national and international importance in great depth and will not only strengthen your writing, speaking, and thinking skills but allow you to make new friends, meet new people, and learn to win arguments with friends, classmates, and parents alike. Some of our favorite topics in the past have been:
- Resolved: The United States Federal Government ought to pay reparations to African Americans.
- Resolved: Committing United States ground combat troops to fight ISIL is in the best interest of the United States.
- Resolved: On balance, economic globalization benefits worldwide poverty reduction.
- Resolved: For-profit prisons in the United States should be banned.
Resolved: On balance, economic globalization benefits worldwide poverty reduction.
OTHER COOL THINGS?
YEAH! HM Debate has a student-run Middle School team with participants across all 3 grades. The curriculum and course material is developed by our Varsity debaters, and we host many practice round that are also judged by Varsity debaters. The Middle School team is very successful in the NY Circuit, and the Varsity debaters also benefit from coaching their younger teammates. In addition to Middle School debaters at HM, HM Debate has recently started a relationship with the InTech Middle School near HM. We send Varsity debaters to InTech every Monday and Wednesday to coach their teams for local tournaments and in general research skills.
